We have been led to believe for many years that carpets cause allergy symptoms, because it holds pet dander, dust, etc. Recently, studies around the world are showing that because carpets hold these things, they are not floating in the air for you to breathe in. Regular vacuuming and cleaning removes these particles. Sweeping and walking on hard-surface floors actually stirs up these particles. Properly maintained carpets will improve the air quality in your home. A 2005 childhood asthma study reported that there wasn’t a difference in symptom improvement or allergen levels in carpeted homes vs. uncarpeted homes. A 15-year Swedish study found no link between the use of carpet and incidents of asthma or allergies. The study also found that when carpet usage decreased by 70%, allergic reactions increased by 30%. Research and toxicology reports in Canada have concluded that children and adults living with carpet do not have an increased incidence of asthma or allergies. So there you have it, yet again, why you should clean your carpets regularly Referrals & Client Rewards Refer a friend and receive a $15 Tim’s or gas card when they have a cleaning done. Renée Environmentally Friendly Cleaning in Your Home Most people don’t think about it, but the products they clean their house with can affect their family’s health. Some cleaners have toxic substances like phthalates in synthetic fragrances to the noxious fumes of sodium hydroxide in oven cleaners. Ingredients in common household products have been linked to asthma, cancer, reproductive disorders, hormone disruption and neurotoxicity. You can be affected by skin contact, inhalation, ingestion and even storing them in your house-hold. Since many homes are almost air-tight these days, our indoor air environment has more chemicals than the air outside. Using natural cleaners like lemon, vinegar and essential oils won’t cause any harm. You can also buy certified cleaners from chain stores, that bear the EcoLogo, Green Seal, and USDA BioBased Certified logos. These logos indicate that the product is actually environmentally friendly and works. Beware, there are many products that say they are, but don’t have any proof! Get educated on these harmful chemicals and make some changes! Referrals & Client Rewards Refer a friend and receive a $15 Tim’s or gas card when they have a cleaning done. The monthly December and January review winners are: Barb Nolan and Mike Bellaire Talk to you soon!Renée The Importance of Vacuuming People shed 1,000,000 skin cells and 50-100 strands of hair every day. Pets also shed their hair and skin and bring dirt inside on their bodies. These particles float around and become trapped all over your house. They can cause reactions to those with asthma and related allergies. Vacuuming will get rid of these things and keep you healthier. Carpet fibers and fabric trap dirt and dust. They need to be vacuumed regularly before the dirt attaches to the fibers. If not, the dirt will become ground into them. This will make them more difficult to clean and it will wear the fibers down, giving a dull appearance. Vacuuming will keep your carpet and upholstery looking new for a longer period of time, which will save you replacement costs. Lastly, vacuuming will make you feel good, knowing its clean and give you a sense of accomplishment. You should vacuum at least twice a week, more often in high traffic areas and daily if you have pets. Renée Buy New or Re-Upholster? Before you replace a couch, consider re-upholstering it. Ask yourself these questions: 1. Does it have sentimental value? If it’s an antique or was your grandmother’s, it will be hard to replace. 2. What kinds of springs does it have? Hand-tied springs are a sign of a quality piece. 3. How heavy is it? Heavier furniture tends to be more solidly constructed. 4. How old is it? A lot of furniture made in the last 10 years are not made as well as the older ones. 5. Has it been re-upholstered before? If it has, it has been around for a while and will probably last quite a few more years. If you really like the piece and it fits well in your house, then that may be the best reason to re-upholster it.
